Human towers break frontiers

The team at the main square for castells (human towers) in Catalonia, la Plaça del Blat at Valls city, was for once wearing neither the red shirt nor the pink one, colours for Colla Vella and Colla Joves. Those one who played a leading role were the members of Colla del Refugi, a human tower team made up of about 30 children and late teenagers, a mixture of Catalan and young foreign people. The castells festival was the closing event for the program Fem pinya (Catalan term used by the human towers slang for “let’s back up” and referring to the building of the tower base) designed by a Vilafranca del Penedès company called Teamtowers. This innovative project has helped to integrate the kids who have recently arrived to local culture.
